Abstract:
Conservation of biodiversity is an area of research that has blossomed in the 1990s. Originally conceived rather narrowly as conservation of species, the 90's saw the development of the concept to include diversity of genes and populations all the way to ecosystems and landscapes. Issues such as provision of ecosystem services, valuation of biological diversity, and management approaches for diversity conservation became focal points of research and debate. Research efforts identified the important roles of invasive species and land use change in driving the loss of biological diversity. This presentation will provide examples of some of the directions that the science has taken in the past decade, and will suggest critical areas for research in the next.
