Why the research you think should be in the news isn't and the news you think shouldn't be in the news is.

Abstract:
Scientists often express befuddlement over why field-changing studies do not make it into the news and why research that is almost universally deemed to be trivial can result in splashy headlines. In a discussion of my own experience as a scientist-turned-journalist in trying to understand what is and isn't news, I will discuss how science does and doesn't end up in places like the Science Times, and what that says about the job science journalists are doing and trying to do.
