Repairing ecosystems: Advances in ecological restoration in the 1990s.

Abstract:
The Sustainable Biosphere Initiative and other writings of the late 1980s and early 1990s called for the application of ecological knowledge and principals to the management, restoration, and maintenance of Earth's ecological life support systems. While considerable effort has been focused on conservation and protection of those ecological systems and services, effort has also grown in the area of restoration. Referred to as the "ultimate test for ecological theory", restoration science has progressed to a multidisciplinary science that draws on ecological knowledge as well as that of the physical sciences, and that works hand in hand with practitioners. In this talk, I will provide examples that illustrate the development of the science and the practice over the past decade, identify major gaps that still exist, and discuss directions for the future.
