Abstract:
As we move into the first decade of the 21st Century, it is clear that the issue of "sustainability" has come to the forefront of science. Organizations, such as the National Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Science Board, and the International Council for Science have called for worldwide collaborative efforts among scientists to address issues of sustainable development and sustenance of Earth's life support systems. Ecology has played a critical role in the development of this emphasis. This presentation discusses some of the new research planning efforts and programs that will broaden and carry forward the goals of the SBI, and the role that the ecological community will need to play in the next decade.
