The CalVeg Geobook: A visual tool for describing vegetation information derived from remotely sensed data. GORDON, H.J.* and B.SCHWIND
USDA Forest Service, Sacramento, CA 95814 USA 1
Abstract: The CalVeg Geobook was developed to provide information on vegetation databases in an intuitive, easy to use, self-contained CD-ROM. As an electronic "book", it provides a summary, illustrations and metadata of the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region's vegetation classification and mapping system, CalVeg. The Geobook is keyed to the Sections level of the National Hierarchical Framework of Ecological Units in California, which are also described. The main CalVeg products are maps of vegetation communities (alliances), and databases containing floristic and forest structural attributes. This system is utilized in forest planning, statewide fuels models and bioregional habitat analysis. Maps and their associated databases have been provided for all national forests (NF) in California and also for selected non-NF lands in partnership with other agencies. The Geobook format communicates information about sources, scales, methods and the appropriate uses of CalVeg data and maps. It is a method of interpreting and interactively displaying ecological data derived from remotely sensed and field sources to current and potential users of the data.
