Abstract:
HONG, S.-K. and I.-J. SONG. Seoul National University, Seoul 151-742 and Seoul Development Institute, Seoul. Traditional Principles of Land Use as a basis of the Urban Landscape Ecology and Planning in Korea. Under the principle of Feng-shui, or wind-water theory based on long-term experience, people determines the optimum location, which is consistent with ecological and cultural attributes as well as bio-geoecology integrated. Planning and management of the populated area in Korea has to be related in the significant degree to the traditional principle of land use. This paper is focusing on the changes of land-use regime and landscape pattern as a case of the whole landscape system modernization of Seoul Metropolitan area in Korea. Seoul was established in accordance with Feng-shui theory before 600 years ago. Socioeconomic systems such as forestry, stream control and cultivation, even in human settlement had been depended on balance between natural process and human needs. Recent modernization and urbanization have been rapidly altering the holistic landscape system and urban ecosystem degraded. Analysis of land-use maps showed that the area of vegetation that had been limited to human activity altered by plantation and housing. Stream and river corridor became straight. Landscape change of urban area was inter-related to the cultural changes initiated by total social and local economic development. We propose guidelines based for the Feng-Shui for urban landscape-ecological planning in Korea with a notion of sustainability.
