A dynamic model of habitat suitability for map turtles (Graptemys spp.).

ABSTRACT- We used a dynamic simulation modelling environment to create a habitat suitability index model for map turtles (Graptemys sp.). Unlike traditional HSI models which provide an index for a single point in time, this method creates indexes for each time step the model is run, allowing seasonal and annual estimations of habitat suitability. Techniques developed provide the basis for directly incorporating expert system techniques in management and population dynamic models. We will present the algorithms used and demonstrate how they were applied. To our knowledge this is the first time an expert system has been done in STELLA, a popular program for modeling population dynamics.
