Invasion of inland lakes of the northern Midwest. Magnuson, John1, 1 ABSTRACT- In small inland lakes invasions of rainbow smelt, rusty crayfish and other species lead to declines in abundance and even to extinction of local species. Research has concentrated on the negative influence the species have. Emphasis of research and management should change to questions of dispersal and prevention of invasions, creative approaches to reduce their abundance in infested lakes, and establishing isolation refuges. The more isolated lakes, i.e., those without stream connections or boat landings, may be the only refuges for native species negatively influenced by the invaders.
