Multi-indicator assessment of mitigated wetlands.

Bartoszek, Joseph*,1, Schneider, Thomas1, 1 Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, Dayton, OH

ABSTRACT- As part of the on-going natural resource restoration work at the US Department of Energy Fernald site in southwest Ohio, a 12 acre wetland mitigation project was constructed. To evaluate restoration success multiple flora and fauna indicators were monitored and evaluated in the project area. In addition to evaluating multiple ecological indicators in the mitigated wetlands, the study monitored similar indicators at baseline and reference sites for comparison. Floral analyses included vegetation surveys and data analysis using modified florist quality assessment index (mFQAI). The mFQAI utilizes non-native and native plants and their respective coefficients of conservatism. Butterfly and skipper monitoring was conducted along a set transect. Amphibians and macroinvertebrates were monitored using periodic funnel trapping. Faunal analyses included diversity indices and percent model affinity. This presentation will provide summary data and conclusions regarding the use of multiple indicator monitoring for evaluating restoration success.
