ABSTRACT- Luna Leopold, son of noted conservationist Aldo Leopold, established himself as a major figure in his own right in the field of fluvial geomorphology. Luna's early research into ecological relationships in US Southwest watersheds provided a base that still influences studies in the region today. Key single and co-authored publications were "Areal Extent of Intense Rainfall, New Mexico and Arizona" (1942), "Vegetation of Southwestern Watersheds in the Nineteenth Century" (1951), "Water and the Southwest" (1960), "Fluvial Processes in Geomorphology" (1964), and "Channel and Hillslope Processes in a Semiarid Area, New Mexico" (1966). This presentation will highlight Dr. Leopold's Southwest research and discuss how present-day river channel and watershed based vegetation studies expand on his work.

KEY WORDS: Luna Leopold, Southwest, watershed, hydrology
