Making restoration an integral component of a botanical garden's message.

Ogren, Jonathan*,1, Windhager, Steve1, 1 Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Austin, TX

ABSTRACT- Through actions, publications, educational opportunities, and public involvement the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is bringing the concepts of ecological restoration to the botanical garden audience. An encompassing value statement allows us to bring continuity to the activities, ideas, and programs of the various departments of the Wildflower Center that include education, horticulture, conservation, and landscape restoration. We value a greater understanding and appreciation of our ecological heritage, leading to better ecological citizenship, thereby fostering a secure ecological future. Within this framework landscape restoration offers us a model to construct our role as ecological citizens and allows us to form the reciprocal relationship with nature needed to create a sound ecological future. Additionally, restoration gives us an investigative framework to discover and understand our ecological heritage. This poster will investigate the integration of restoration into the activities of the entire Center and how that message is being brought to the audience of our botanical garden.
