Lead contamination detection in an inner city community.

JOHN, MIKE1, GREEN, TERRY1, WAMBULULA, CHARLES*,1, 1 Bethune-Cookman College, Daytona Beach, FL

ABSTRACT- Preliminary evaluation of soil samples from various demografic sites show high levels of lead contamination from at least one of these sites. More sophisticated measurements to determine precise levels, are being presently pursued. This study is conducted by the SEEDS-sponsored B-CC Ecology Club which has involved local youth in this project, developing activities to train them in fundamentals of sampling for environmental pollutants. Contaminated samples were taken from a site commonly used as a make-shift playground by children from the neighboring Bethune Village community in the city of Daytona Beach, Florida.
