Applying traditional knowledge to modern ecological restoration.

ALCOZE, THOM*,1, 1 Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff

ABSTRACT- This presentation will focus on ecological restoration treatments that incorporate the traditional knowledge of the Kaibab Paiute people in modern ecological restoration research and applications on the Arizona Strip. Research efforts by Ecological Restoration Institute (NAU) faculty and students on the Kaibab Paiute Reservation complements research by an extensive network of agencies and communities engaged in varied restoration projects on or near the reservation to reduce catastrophic fire threat and rehabilitate post-fire landscapes. The network includes the Southern Band of Kaibab Paiute Indians, Zion National Park, the Ecological Restoration Institute at Northern Arizona University, the NAU School of Forestry and Center for Excellence in Education, the University of North Texas Department of Biological Sciences, the Fredonia-Moccasin School District, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Three common goals unite these community-based projects: effective applied research for post-fire landscape treatments; effective applied research for fire prevention treatments around villages and homes; and careful, ecological restoration research where native people and their traditional knowledge are included. Up-to-date information about six current restoration projects and how they are related will be provided. Particular emphasis on the ethical and methodological foundations for research in diverse communities is included.
