Kukuk, Penelope*,1, Baumeister, Dayna1, Funk, Chris1, Hastings, Kim1, Moynahan, October1, Ramstad, Kristina1, Tallmon, David1, White, Dawn1, 1 Division of Biological Sciences, Missoula, MT ABSTRACT- The "Training Within Environmental Biology" (Training-WEB) Program is a conservation and environmental biology Ph.D. program housed within the Division of Biological Sciences at The University of Montana. Our goal is to train creative scientists who are flexible thinkers, able to work collaboratively with decision makers in academia, government, and private enterprise. The program structure is depicted schematically below. A unique component of this program is an internship requirement, where Ph.D. students spend up to one year working in the private sector, with a government agency or foreign research institute, or involved with some aspect of science education. Masters level students will participate in internships of shorter duration. Following the internship, students summarize their experience in a departmental seminar, and a chapter in their thesis or dissertation, outlining the relationship between basic science and environmental decision-making, and suggesting ways to strengthening that relationship.
