60 Application of riparian restoration techniques to montane streams in Arizona. Steed, James*,1, Long, Jonathan2,3, Medina, Alvin1, DeWald, Laura2, 1 Rocky Mountain Research Station, Flagstaff, AZ2 Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, AZ3 White Mountain Apache Tribe, White River, AZ ABSTRACT- We applied several restoration techniques to a suite of montane streams in eastern and northern Arizona. Restoration measures included installation of riffle formations, bank shaping, and transplanting and seeding of native sedge and rush species. The installation of riffle formations resulted in immediate and sustained improvements in the longitudinal stability of channels as well as increases in pool volume. Bank shaping and transplanting resulted in successful establishment of native riparian vegetation at several sites. Transplanting was most successful during summer and when species were transplanted at appropriate depths to groundwater. KEY WORDS: riparian restoration, montane meadows, revegetation |
