Using the Lincoln Index for population's density estimation and spatial distribution of Mastomys erythroleucus (Rodentia) on Madeleine island Park (Senegal).

ABSTRACT- Using the Lincoln index method in the Parc National des iles de la Madeleine (PNIM) we obtained a density of 95 individuals / ha for Mastomys erythroleucus. If we consider the Average D as the width of peripheral strip around the trapping area, this density belongs to the interval [85; 109] 95% confidence interval. Some characteristics of their spatial structure were estimated. The average distance or average D is 19.01 m ; The range-length is 25.5 m and the home range (vital area) obtained using the inclusive bundary strip method is 590.7 square meters. The average D and the Home range of juvenile specimens are statistically lower (p < 0.05) than those of adults. The minimum distance between specimens of each social categories (male-male, female-female) and the minimum distance between specimens of two different social categories (male-female and adults-juveniles) were estimated: statistical analysis of these different inter-individuals distances shows that the pattern of this population's spatial distribution is very close to a random distribution. Our result confirm the relative stability of the PNIM's M. erythroleucus population, compared to previous work and results obtained 15 years ago. Our present data also comfirm the impact of the scale (spatial sampling size) on the population's abundance, density and Home range estimation.
