Protection of biodiversity in the agricultural landscapes. Karg, Jerzy, Ryszkowski, Lech, ABSTRACT- Shelterbelts, stretches of meadows, small mid-field water reservoirs or wetlands provide good refuge for many organisms. In the Turew agricultural landscape (Western Poland) more then 800 species of vascular plants, about 600 species of fungi were detected. As many as 60-100% of animal taxa showed by regional lists of taxa is living in this agricultural landscape. The abundance of refuge sites in the Turew landscape enable existence of big mammals like wildboar, border, roe deer as well as nesting rare birds such as raven, little owl, great grey shrake, crane. Continuous monitoring of above ground insect community in the Turew landscape since 1984 has shown substantial changes in its composition. E.g. increase in the Coleoptera, appearance of new pests to crops, changes in dominance structure of community. Those changes are correlated with alternation in crop structure, climatic changes and others. The role of mosaic structure of non-productive components of landscape has important bearing on biodiversity in agricultural landscapes.
