Innovative systems for treating stormwater and wastewater in the urban environment. Haag, Dennis *,1, 2, 1 The Watershed Institute, Inc., Overland Park, Kansas, USA2 Tetra Tech EM Inc., Lenexa, Kansas, USA ABSTRACT- The paper provides a summary of the latest best management practices (BMPs) including stream buffers, wetland treatment technologies and other BMPs being advanced in the Kansas City Region. Stream buffers and wetlands present excellent opportunities for the development of innovative natural treatment systems for stormwater. Both demonstration and full-scale projects using these natural treatment systems or technologies have been implemented successfully in various regions of the United States, and around the world. Not only do these systems present an opportunity for natural treatment of stormwater, they also present the possibility for use of biomass and wastes as usable products or resources. Benefits to use of these products include recreational amenities, enhanced wildlife habitat, use of biomass for fuel, wood products such as lumber and pulp, compost and fertilizer, and remediation of contaminated surface and groundwater. Key words: wetlands, best management practices, biomass conversion, lake aeration systems |
