ABSTRACT- The CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) is implementing laboratories overseas in foreign countries but also in French territories outside of European Continent. In this framework, the French Guyana has been chosen to develop a research structure. This choice has been governed by the following arguments: the number of researchers coming from CNRS labs, already implied on this territory (about 250), the richness of research subjects, particularly them which are related to biodiversity, to social diversity, to tropical environment, to long term sustainable development of human societies and to adapted and diversified technologies to ensure such a development in intertropical countries. The main common topics concern: diversity, complexity, embedded systems, organization of systems (self-organization or human controlled organization) and integrative approaches (with two meanings: (1) biological like meaning: identification of organization levels and relationships between these levels, (2) combinations of different kinds of entities in a same system: living, physico-chemical, social, etc.). These concepts mainly appeared in biological sciences could be useful in other fields (e.g. environmental, social and engineering sciences). The importance of techniques, of methodologies and of theoretical approaches to formulate and to solve connected problems has been also underlined, e.g. data analysis, modelling, simulation. Eventually, the Amazonian region appears to be a good field to develop basic and applied researches which results could be adapted to other tropical regions.
