Ecological characteristics of rivers in small-medium cities and plans for environment-friendly management, South Korea. Han, Bong-Ho1, Kim, Jeong-Ho*,2, Bae, Jeong-Hee3, 1 University of Seoul, Seoul, South Korea2 University of Seoul, Seoul, South Korea3 University of Seoul, Seoul, South Korea ABSTRACT- The aim of this study is to understand ecological characteristics of Hwangryong-gang in Changseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, one of the rivers in small-medium cities in South Korea, in order to suggest ways to manage conservation of ecosystem and ecological use of the river. Researches were classified into 2 groups: analyzation of ecological characteristics and a plan for environment-friendly management of rivers. As for ecological characteristics, actual vegetation and land use type and the vegetation structure of riverside were analyzed to understand characteristics of vegetation structure while habitat characteristics of wild birds as indicator animals were examined to see characteristics of animal habitat state. In addition, researches of characteristics of vegetation structure and characteristics of animal habitat state were used to assess biotope. Under the plan for environment-friendly management of rivers, plans for conservation and creation of habitats and plans for hydrophilic use and recreational use were made. Actual vegetation and land use type of Hwangryong-gang were classified into 53 types. The surface of water accounted for 43.73% and vegetation area took up 48.11%. Most riversides had maintained revetment and some part of the river was restored in a nature-friendly way. Wild birds that were selected as indicator species for animal habitat state in this study. A total of 72 species and 2,805 populations were observed. Based on vegetation structure and animal habitat state, biotope type was established. Biotope was classified into a total of 12 types. Among the types, the surface of water type(43.73%) accounted for the most, followed by swampy native herb plants type(23.73%) and dry native herb plants type(9.26%). The plans for environment-friendly management is pursuing conservation and restoration of river ecosystem, restoration of river vegetation landscape and active use of the riverside based on Hwangryong-gang natural resources. Under the plan for conservation and restoration of the river ecosystem. It is suggested that river ecosystem which is in good condition needs to be conserved and damaged river ecosystem needs to be restored. The plan for restoration of river vegetation landscape proposes to create scenic river landscape by restoration. Key words: restoration, vegetation structure, wildbird habitat state |
