Thematic Knowledge Collection Landscape Science: A virtual centre to store research information and to sharpen the boundaries of landscape sciences. Augustin, Claudia*,1, Pilz, Jörg*,1, Werner, Armin*,1, 1 Centre for Landscape and Land Use Research, Müncheberg, Germany ABSTRACT- Landscape research is a perfect example of a completely interdisciplinary research field with all its difficulties and advantages. It is not easy to define the boundaries of the included scientific disciplines and it is not easy find orientation within the information available to the research field. On the other hand the interdisciplinary approach offers the chance for synergistic benefits and supports solving real world problems. Landscape related research could be found within disciplines from fundamental sciences as well as from applied sciences, social sciences but also from practical land use and landscape planning. All of these disciplines publish their research results and theoretical findings separately or jointly. An important goal should be to make freely available published and unpublished information but also original data to enhance information exchange and collaborative scientific work. The Thematic Knowledge Collection Landscape Science (TWL) will be an Internet based information centre that is fed and run by the research community. It will store or link scientific publications or papers and will link them to the original data. In addition it will offer standards for storing available data and information within research institutions or research projects working within landscape sciences. A large diversity of scientific disciplines works within the broad area of landscape research. But landscape research is not a mere collection of scientific disciplines working on the same platform of scientific problems. Due to the joint definition of the research object, the own methods and the development of an own scientific body the landscape sciences are a meta-discipline. To explicitly define its body and to give orientation within the space of information a TWL would be very helpful. The poster describes the purpose and concept of the research activity towards a TWL and asks for discussion of this initiative from a German group of scientific institutions. Key words: landscape research, knowledge collection, data publication, infornation centre |
