Humminbirds and its nectar source: Testing spatio-temporal and ecological hierachies in three landscapes. Ortiz-Pulido, Raul*,1, Diaz, Sylvia Anaid2, Valle, Oscar2, Arregui, Lucia3, Fisher, Anna D.2, Bravo, Jessica1, 1 Centro de Investigaciones Biologicas, Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo, Pachuca, Hidalgo, México2 Departamento de Quimica y Biologia, Universidad ed las Americas-Puebla, Cholula, Puebla, Mexico3 Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Madrid, España ABSTRACT- Relationship between hummingbirds and its nectar sources had been tested few times taking into account different spatio-temporal scales and ecological jerarquies below the 10,000 square kilometers. In this study we searched the relationship between both variables in a temperate dry landscape of central Mexico. In the lower levels of each scale few of the relations were significant, while in the higher levels, practicately all the relationships were significants. Scaling up the spatial scale from hectares to kilometers, we found a significative relationship between abundance and richness of humminbirds and its nectar sources at kilometers level. Scaling up the temporal scale from days to years, we found a significative relationship at year level. Scaling up the ecological jerarquies from species to community we found significant relationships in the latter. Using the same design (following to Garcia and Ortiz-Pulido 2004, Ecography 27:187-196) we tested the hypotesis in three landscapes far away from the first study site (near of 200 km) and we obtained simmilar results. Key words: Scale, Hierarchy, Hummingbirds, Avian-plant interaction |
