We analyzed recent land-cover and land-use changes in two ejidos, San Angel and Solferino, bordering the Protection Area "Yum-Balam" in Northwest Quintana Roo, Mexico (total study area: 27,822 ha). Aerial photographs of 1979 and 2000, and Landsat MSS and TM satellite images of 1976 and 2000 were digitized, geo-referenced and entered in a GIS. Field verifications and interviews were made in addition to document to the land-use history and the productive practices in the study area. Semi-evergreen tropical forests (SETF) almost duplicated their cover between 1979 (10,832 ha) and 2000 (21,393 ha), becoming the dominant category. This was due mainly to the regeneration of 10,179 ha in areas that in 1979 were accidentally burned around low seasonally-flooded areas. The greatest increase in cover (from 266 to 2,878 ha) corresponded to secondary forests, originating primarily from recently-abandoned agricultural lands. The net annual rate of change for SETF cover was positive (3 - 3.8%, depending on how it is calculated) and was greater in San Angel (4.7 - 6%) than in Solferino (2 - 2.5%), because forest regeneration in recently-abandoned agricultural lands was also greater in San Angel than in Solferino. Abandonment of agricultural lands followed the end of governmental programs that provided subsidies for cattle raising and promoted deforestation in the late 60s. Present tendencies towards land privatization, rising tourism and new subsidies for agriculture suggest a scenario in the near future of greater deforestation in the study area, particularly in San Angel. SPANISH ABSTRACT- Caracterizar la cobertura y el uso del suelo de una localidad en el espacio y el tiempo es fundamental para entender y poder predecir las transformaciones de los ecosistemas y su relación con las prácticas productivas.
