The impact of internal and international migration on the environment: The case of Nepal.

ABSTRACT- This study examines the effect of ecological deterioration on internal and international migration in rural Nepal. Using longitudinal data from an ongoing field survey of Nepal′s Chitwan Valley, we examine indicators of deforestation and agrarian land conversion and relate them to respondent′s subjective perceptions of changes in the quality of the local environment. We then estimate a discrete time event history analysis that relates objective changes in land usage and forestation and subjective perceptions of shifts in agricultural productivity, water purity, and air quality to the likelihood that a household sends out a migrant for wage labor, either within Nepal or to another country.
SPANISH ABSTRACT- Este estudio examina el efecto de deterioro ecológica en la migración interna e internacional en el Nepal rural. Usando datos longitudinales de una encuesta, en curso, en la zona rural del valle de Chitwan, Nepal, examinamos indicadores de la tala de árboles y de la conversión agraria de la tierra y las relacionamos con las opiniones subjetivas del entreviostado sobre los cambios en la calidad del ambiente local. Entonces estimamos un análisis "discreto" de la historia del acontecimiento en el tiempo que relacione cambios objetivos en el uso de la tierra, la forestación y las opiniones subjetivas de cambios en productividad, pureza del agua, y calidad agrícolas del aire con la probabilidad de que un hogar envió a un migrante para trabajar dentro o fuera del país.
