Transforming agriculture for a new era.

ABSTRACT- The industrialization of agriculture took its clues from Justus von Liebig’s Chemistry in the Application to Agriculture and Physiology published in 1840. Liebig’s claim that agricultural productivity could be maintained by substituting chemical fertilizers for the more laborious tasks of manuring soils and other nutrient cycling practices led to the specialization, simplification and concentration of agriculture that is now typical of most modern farming systems. But these specialized systems are very energy intensive and as our fossil fuel resources, which have fueled these industrial practices for over 50 years continue to be depleted, we will see the need for a new agriculture for a new era, an agriculture that works for both developed and developing nations. What new clues do we have that can help us imagine, and implement the new agriculture?
SPANISH ABSTRACT- La industrialización de la agricultura tomó sus pautas del libro de Justus von Liebig Química en la Aplicación a la Agricultura y Fisiología publicado en 1840. Liebig argumentó que la productividad agrícola podía ser mantenida mediante la sustitución de fertilizantes químicos por tareas más trabajosas como agregar estiércol al suelo y otras prácticas de reciclaje de nutrientes. Esto llevó a la especialización, simplificación y concentración de la agricultura que hoy es típica de la mayoría de los sistemas de producción modernos. Pero estos sistemas especializados requieren muchos insumos de energía, y a medida que nuestros recursos de combustibles fósiles, con los que hemos alimentado estas prácticas industriales por más de 50 años, continúan agotándose, veremos la necesidad de una nueva agricultura para una nueva era, una agricultura que funcione tanto para países desarrollados como para subdesarrollados. ¿Qué nuevas pautas tenemos que nos ayuden a imaginar e implementar la nueva agricultura?
