Globalization and sustainable forestry in the Americas. Bartuska, Ann*,1, 1 USDA Forest Service, Washington, DC, USA ABSTRACT- Global trends in forestry and the forest products marketplace are driving governments, industry and the natural resource profession to think differently. Certification, carbon sequestration and carbon trading, and ecosystem services are all concepts that are being put into practice as managers and policy-makers look to new solutions for maintaining ecologically and economically sustainable forest ecosystems. There is increased recognition that community-based forestry is a viable model to ensure sustainable forestry practices, as long as market-based mechanisms are available and communities have the necessary technical tools and training to be effective .
