(P762) The Effects of Channelization on Benthic Macroinvertebrate Populations within a Contaminated Urban Stream. Gneiding, Laurie*,1, Calhoun, Christy1, Harman, Charles1, 1 AMEC Earth and Environmental, Inc., Somerset, NJ, USA ABSTRACT- As part of a RCRA Facility assessment, benthic macroinvertebrate and surface water and sediment sampling were conducted concurrently within upstream and downstream portions of an urban stream. In addition, a habitat evaluation was completed in accordance with the Rapid Bioassessment Protocols. An evaluation was completed to determine if physical or chemical stressors were the cause of benthic community impairment. In general, the results of the evaluation were inconclusive as benthic indices indicated greater impairment in areas of better habitat and less contamination. Key words: channelization, macroinvertebrates, PAHs, metals |
