(364) Fugacity for Thought. Gobas, Frank*,1, 1 Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, BC, Canada ABSTRACT- Over the last 3 decades, evidence supports the hypothesis that Professor Donald Mackay has been on a tireless quest to reduce his fugacity while keeping his activity up. This apparent thermodynamic paradox, while recognized, welcomed and celebrated by his students, followers and the scientific community at large, has not received all the attention it deserves. In fact, the hypothesis has never been formally discussed, tested and scrutinized. In this paper, we present several lines of evidence to test the basis for the hypothesis. We will discuss a suite of recipes that have been developed to (i) measure fugacity, (ii) calculate the fugacity and (iii) reduce the fugacity of nasty organic pollutants. We will further show correlations between fugacity and activity to explore the fugacity-activity relationship. Finally, we will discuss the consequences and implications of this paradox on his followers, the scientific community and society at large. It is concluded that recognition of "fugacity" as food for thought can provide innumerable intellectual and practical rewards. The world is therefore a less hazardous place to eat thanks to Professor Don Mackay's contributions and we are all smarter because he gave us fugacity for thought. Key words: Fugacity, Food |
