(IP77) A dual chamber plant growth chamber for plant uptake and phytotoxicity studies.

Doucette, William*,1, Bugbee, Bruce, Chard, Julie1, 1 Utah State University, Logan, UT, USA

ABSTRACT- Accurately determining the plant uptake and phytotoxicity of organic compounds requires growth chambers that provide natural plant growth conditions, a mechanism for the delivery of a constant dose of test compound, and the ability to accurately determine the distribution of the test compounds within the plant. In this presentation, the design, construction and operation of a high rate, flow-through plant growth chamber system designed to provide high mass recoveries, a realistic plant environment, and complete separation between foliar and root uptake will be described. Results from several studies designed to evaluate the plant uptake and translocation of volatile organic compounds such as trichloroethylene and benzene will be discussed.

Key words: volatile organic compounds, foliar uptake, trichloroethylene, benzene
