(PH197) Lead flow assessment in the Seine basin in France.

ABSTRACT- As it passes through the Paris conurbation, the Seine absorbs trace elements of the cities which have environmental impacts on the river. The aim of our work was to identify the various sources of these trace elements, and to determine whether they stemmed from isolated emissions from current industries, or if they were a legacy of past industrial activity. We also needed to determine the part played by the gradual wearing away of the enormous accumulated store of objects which together form an urban reservoir of these elements and how significant is the contribution of the waste which they contain. To answer this complex question, we built up a picture of the industrial metabolism of lead in the geographical area concerned: in this case the Seine Basin. From a retrospective analysis of industrial statistics from the 19th and 20th centuries, we have endeavoured to estimate the various flows of material in the geographical area under consideration: inflows through importation or production, storage within the city in the form of objects in use or on refuse sites, discharges into the different environmental subsystems of air, water and soil, outflows through exportation, and so on. In this paper we describe only the flows of lead, a metal known from the earliest of times, yet one which has accompanied all major technological advances. The most interesting property of lead is its relative immobility in the environment, which allows us to quantify the reservoir of this element in human-made environments.
