() Modelling seafloor use of fisheries in a GIS.

ABSTRACT- A method to model the seafloor use of fisheries by overlaying data on fishing effort distribution with marine habitat maps in a Geographical Information System (GIS) will be presented. The method was developed by analysing data for Swedish groundfish fisheries in the Kattegat during 2001-2003 and advantages of this method compared with earlier approaches will be explained. It was found that fishing activity was highly concentrated to certain areas and that the fishing pressure in the marine habitats of the area varies considerably. Biological effects of the found fishing intensities in different habitats and their ability to recover from the fishing-induced disturbance will be discussed. The developed methodology can be useful in ecosystem-based fisheries management and in environmental assessment including seafloor use as an environmental impact category.
