ABSTRACT- In support of the effort to establish a total maximum daily load for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the Delaware River, concentrations of PCBs were determined in the gaseous, aerosol, dissolved, and suspended matter phases for five water quality zones of the river. Measeurements were taken as far north as Trenton, NJ, and as far south as Delaware Bay during four sampling intensive campaigns. This work presents estimates of atmospheric deposition fluxes of PCBs to the Delaware River, and calculates net air-water exchange fluxes of PCBs in the five water quality zones. Differences in the magnitude of the PCB fluxes in each zone may be due to their relative proximity to urban areas.

Key words: air-water exchange, polychlorinated biphenyls, Delaware River, flux
