(PT028) A Mobile Platform for Air Toxics Monitoring in New Jersey, USA.

Wall, S.1, Totten, L.1, 1 Department of Environmental Sciences, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA

ABSTRACT- In order to gain insight to the general levels of air toxics to which people are being exposed, many environmental organizations throughout the world utilize networks of immobile, permanent sampling facilities. However, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has recognized that at times the concentration of air toxics outside these areas needs to be evaluated in order to look at maximum exposures and address more specific local concerns, or urgent needs. This study utilizes a combination of sensitive, transportable sampling equipment to determine levels of four categories of air toxics: semivolatile organic chemicals (SOCs), carbonyls, toxic volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), and speciated PM 2.5. In the first phase of the project, each instrument is gauged to a counterpart that exists at a permanent sampling facility run by the NJDEP. Samples collected to date illustrate the validity of the equipment, and upon validation the study will begin to collect air toxics data from a numerous new sites of concern across NJ.

Key words: Volatile organic chemicals, Semivolatile organic chemicals, Carbonyls, PM 2.5
