PM07 Pollutant Chemistry Transport, Cycling and Fate (PM085) Heavy metal pollution in the alpine tourist areas and its quantitative behavior analysis. OZAKI, Hirokazu1, WATANABE, Izumi2, KUNO, Katsuji2, 1 Ocean Research Institute,The University of Tokyo, JAPAN2 Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, JAPAN ABSTRACT- Overuse problem is now being an issue of many famous tour spots worldwide. It is pointed out that the popularization of automobiles and prolongation of roadway made it easy to approach to famous natural parks. Automobile is also known as the non-point source of diverse pollutants such as harmful trace elements (e.g., heavy metals). Roadside soils and dusts were collected from Kamikochi, Chubu Sangaku national park, where is a famous alpine tour spot called Japan Alps and urban area (Matsumoto City) sited at its downstream in Japan. V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sb, Hg and Pb concentrations were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Results and Discussions (1)Automobiles are the major source of heavy metal pollution in the soils and dusts along alpine roadways because the pollution level raised accompanied with traffic volume spatiotemporally. (2)The comparable Cd, Zn, Pb levels were observed in Kamikochi to those in urban area. (3)Cu, Zn, Sb in particular, showed clear geographical and seasonal change in agreement with traffic volume that they can be valid indicators of automobile pollution. (4)Physicochemical condition changes such as Eh and pH(KCl) by anthropogenic emission contributed to heavy metal retention. (5)The total concentrations had the largest relationship to the amount and percentage of heavy metal elution. (6)Pollution at Bus Terminal in alpine area will reach to urban level and much larger elution than accumulation was estimated. During the survey period (May 1998-Nov. 2001), amount of Sb eluted is 198mg/g and accumulation is 0.786ug/g. Key words: Automobiles, Heavy metal pollution, Alpine tour spots, Overuse |
