() A Tale of Two Institutions: Integrating Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology into the Curriculum.

Alegria, H1, 1 California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, CA, USA

ABSTRACT- This talk will report on my contrasting experiences at two small, private, liberal-arts institutions in attempting to introduce courses in environmental chemistry and in ecotoxicology into the curriculum. Challenges to the successful integration of these courses include a skeptical administration; unsupportive colleagues; attracting sufficient students; and lack of equipment. I will discuss a successful approach based on interdisciplinary course content and the use of semester-long research projects for the laboratory components. I will also discuss the integration of environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology into the analytical chemistry curriculum.

Key words: curriculum, interdisciplinary, ecotoxicology, chemistry
