MP11A Case Studies on Fisheries Products () Sustainability as the quintessence of international marine fish production. Lankester, K1, 1 Scomber, Amsterdam, The netherlands ABSTRACT- Fishing fleets have moved further away from home and deeper into the ocean in search of new resources. On the distant fishing grounds they often meet competitors from other nations. Fisheries for shared stocks often lack the effective international management needed to ensure sustainability. The tragedy of diminishing marine resources has to be overcome on time to maintain healthy marine life, a healthy industry and a healthy human food source. The international scope of fisheries and their markets needs regulation at a global level. A first crucial component for securing commercially viable fisheries in the long run is effective management of international fisheries on shared stocks. This equally applies to feed fisheries that serve marine aquaculture. Third-party certification of well managed fisheries on a voluntary basis is the second format seeking to combine business and conservation interests. This essay describes the status quo and suggestions for further progress of both components. The question remains whether there will be enough time left to penetrate these into the traditional fishing industry. Key words: international agreements, fisheries, market instrument, certification |
