PW06 Life-Cycle Assessment (PW050) Complementary Roles of Coal and Natural Gas in Thailand Based on Life-cycle Thinking Considerations. Sampattagul, Sate1, 2, Kato, Seizo1, Maruyama, Naoki1, Nishimura, Akira1, Kiatsiriroat, Tanongkiat2, 1 Mie University, Tsu, Mie, Japan2 Chiang Mai University, Muang, Chiang mai, Thailand ABSTRACT- Power sector development in Thailand is facing immense social and environmental challenges. On one hand we find an institutionalized setup consisting of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and a number of private power producers, setting the pace for the establishment of a power sector based on large-scale, separate production of heat and power based on fossil fuel such as coal and natural gas. On the other hand, the earth, air and water are polluted by industry, transportation and energy to a degree that threatens both health and livelihood of our people. At the same time, the majority of Thai population may be considered to be poor, underemployed, and left without influence on the development of the energy sector. In this study, we set out to analyze and discuss the environment and economic of sustainable energy from life-cycle thinking concept, in which focused on the coal-fired power plant and the natural gas-fired power plant. It is necessary to understand the environmental influences from electricity production systems, in which could be instructed the component of environmental plan for reducing environmental problems. The objective of the study is to evaluate the consolidated life cycle assessment of the power plants by using Numerical Eco-Load Total Standardization (NETS), which is used for evaluating the environmental burdens by identifying and quantifying energy and materials used and waste released to environment. In additions, a technical-economic cost-benefit analysis is performed. As a result, it could be shown that the innovative scheme is supportive as a decision-making tool for environmental alternative methodologies to minimize the environmental impacts from the energy sectors. LCA-NETS is extremely practical apparatus for further ecological and economical improvement for green technology for power plant and help implement a sustainable energy sector development for a better society. Key words: Numerical Eco-load Total Standardization, Life Cycle Thinking, Power Generation Plants, Thailand |
