PW06 Life-Cycle Assessment (PW054) Challenges and responses to water supply in Dalian, China. Geng, Y1, Young, S2, Zhu, Q1, 1 Dalian University of Technology (DUT), Dalian, Liaoning, China2 SB Young Consulting Limited, Gueph, Ontario, Canada ABSTRACT- Dalian is a modern city of six million people located on the north east China coast. Here, at the south end of the Liaodong Peninsula water supply is a serious and mounting concern. An international center of shipping, commerce/trade, tourism, finance and information, Dalian is growing rapidly in its role as a commercial gateway between the greater Beijing region and Pacific trade partners. A mega-project 145 km water pipeline project from Yingna River into the city Dalian will soon be completed. Additional technological measures include building underground reservoirs, increased water desalination, seawater cooling for industry, rain collection project, enhanced urban sewage treatment, water reclamation, and industrial and residential water efficiency. Water governance and institutional issues are being addressed this year at a workshop in June that brings together key water management actors in Dalian for the first time. Stakeholders in water management decision making in Dalian include provincial and municipal agencies, the high tech zones, enterprises, academic and research institutions and interest groups. Discussions cover planning issues, institutional issues, water conservation and industrial water use. Under the umbrella of integrated water management in Dalian, a case study summary of experiences and lessons learned will be offset with discussions of challenges. Particular focus is on the role and potential of eco-industrial parks and the use of industrial environmental management approaches to better manage the water resource.
