() The Office of Pesticide Program Approach to Formulated Product Mixture Ecological Risk Assessment.

Odenkirchen, E1, Steeger, T1, 1 USEPA/Office of Pesticide programs/Environmental Fate and Effects Division, Washington, DC

ABSTRACT- Pesticide regulatory decisions are made for labeled uses of formulated pesticide products containing an active pesticidal ingredient in combination with inert ingredients such as adjuvants, surfactants, etc. Much of the ecological risk assessment analyses conducted in support of these regulatory decisions are based on a characterization of exposure and effects for the active pesticidal ingredients. However, when effects data are available that suggest that formulated products have a greater toxic hazard than the active ingredient alone, OPP has established approaches to characterize organism exposure to the formulated product. This presentation will (1) discuss the basic approaches for technical grade active ingredient ecological risk assessment with an emphasis on effects and exposure characterization, (2) characterize those approaches for assessing risks of formulated products, and (3) present OPP approaches for formulated product risk assessment. The views presented here are the views of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Key words: formulation, pesticide, exposure, effects
