ABSTRACT- King County has conducted extensive benthic macroinvertebrate sampling throughout the Greater Lake Washington and Green-Duwamish River watersheds in 2002 and 2003. Historically, King County has monitored benthic macroinvertebrate populations under numerous projects and funding sources for a variety of purposes. This project provided an opportunity to characterize aquatic macroinvertebrate populations across these two watersheds for the purpose of establishing baseline watershed conditions and eventually detecting long-term macroinvertebrate population trends. This required a new sampling design based on random site selection in order to make statistical comparisons among subbasins. Presented here is an overview of the program, as well as the B-IBI results of 150 sites sampled in 2002, along with preliminary correlations with other indices, land use, water quality, and other information.

Key words: B-IBI, macroinvertebrate, watershed
