PT13 Aquatic Ecotoxicology I (PT171) The effect of fluoride on the toxicity of aluminum to two marine species. Elphick, J1, Pidgeon, C1, Hopkins, S1, Bergmann, K1, Bailey, H1, Mulhall, A2, Hunt, P2, 1 Nautilus Environmental, Tacoma, WA, USA2 Sinclair Knight Merz, Sydney, NSW, Australia ABSTRACT- Aluminum can form a number of complexes with fluoride which exhibit differing chemical and toxicological properties. Fluoride and aluminum are often present in combination in discharges from aluminum smelters, which are most frequently located in coastal areas. The interactive nature of aluminum and fluoride is well understood in freshwater, but is more poorly understood in marine environments. Consequently, this study was conducted to investigate the effect of fluoride on the toxicity of aluminum in two standardized marine toxicity tests. The results of this study demonstrate that the presence of fluoride attenuates the toxicity of aluminum in bivalve larval development tests using the Mediterranean blue mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis). Key words: Fluoride, Aluminum, Marine |
