() Fun and technically challenging experiments for analytical environmental chemistry.

Mabury, S.1, 1 Department of Chemistry University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada

ABSTRACT- Our Analytical Environmental Chemistry course endeavors to train students in advanced techniques of analysis as applied to the trace analysis of environmental pollutants. Students specifically experience each step of analysis from sampling environmental matrices to sample handling, basic chromatography, and the specific techniques of GC, HPLC, AAS/ICP, ELISA, and MS. Lab experiments illustrate each of the concepts presented in lecture and in many instances endeavor to expose students to analysis within a research investigation. This talk will present the juncture between the analytical technique, the research question, and the fun aspect of experiments involving: 1) air sampling of smoky bars; 2) nicotine metabolism; 3) super hot chili peppers; 4) sediment coring for history; and 5) PFOS in fish livers.

Key words: LC/MS/MS & GC/MS & ICP, Analytical Environmental Chemistry, Research & Teaching, Accuracy & Precision
