() Sustainability toolkit for product service systems.

Goedkoop, M.J.1, 1 PRé Consultants, Amersfoort, The Netherlands

ABSTRACT- A large EU funded consortium (MEPSS) developed a toolkit for the development of sustainable product service systems. The project has three research lines: Design, Consumer acceptance and Sustainability Assessment. This paper reports on the sustainability assessment toolkit. The toolkit contains 12 tools that form an integrated set. Users can start with the broad and not so detailed tools, like the mapping of indicators and the system analysis. When more complex questions arise a second and third layer of tools is available to address these. Examples of such tools are, the Virtue matrix, to set desirable levels for social issues, I/O tools, Screening LCA and Total Cost Assessment. Also tools that help to assess the overall profitability are included. The paper addresses the structure and the application of the toolkit, and will highlight the application and usability in practice, using the feedback derived form application in real business cases. The key message are: (1) There is not a single tool that can address all issues connected to sustainability (2) Businesses themselves need to be able to determine which issues are important enough to further research with a certain tool. (3) In principle there is no lack of tools, but there is lack of oversight and integration between tools.

Key words: toolkit, sustainability, Product-service-systems, assessment
