ABSTRACT- Many urban property developments adjacent to water bodies were historically constructed upon a variety of sources of fill material, some of which are impacted with trace metals. There are many complications associated with estimating the flux of these metals from the source fill material to adjacent surface water, including, but not limited to subsurface hydrodynamics, potential tidal influences, hydrogeochemical alterations, and surface water mixing. This presentation will address conceptual considerations, integrated modeling strategies, and site investigation methodologies for evaluating these complex processes at the subsurface-surface interface. Observed site data from waterfront urban developments will be employed to examine fate and transport analyses for chromium, lead, and arsenic. Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL) of metals are often an important regulatory driver for metal concentrations in urban waters. The implications of fate and transport of metals from subsurface urban fill material to TMDLs for surface water bodies will be discussed.

Key words: fill material, metals, TMDL
