ABSTRACT- Concentrations of perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and several other perfluorinated alkylated surfactants (PASs) were measured in the livers of two species of sport fish, smallmouth bass and largemouth bass, from 20 inland lakes in New York (NY). PASs were also measured in the livers of ten species of birds from the Niagara River area, Buffalo, NY. PFOS was the most abundant perfluorinated compound and was found in all fish and bird samples. PFOS concentrations in the livers of fishes ranged from 9 to 315 ng/g wet weight. Concentrations of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonamide (PFOSA) were measured at 10-fold lower concentrations from <1.5 to 7.7 ng/g and from 1.5 to 11.4 ng/g, wet wt, respectively. Perfluorohexanesulfonate (PFHS) was not measured at > 1.5 ng/g in any of the fish livers. No significant difference in PAS concentrations were found between smallmouth and largemouth bass, which was expected as these species co-exist and have similar diets. PFOS concentrations ranged from 11 to 882 ng/g wet weight in the livers of birds. The highest concentrations were found in piscivorous bufflehead (880 ng/g) and common merganser (715 ng/g); however there were no significant differences in liver PFOS concentrations between piscivorous and non- piscivorous bird species. PFOA, PFOSA and PFHS were not measured at > 7.5 ng/g in any of the bird livers. Overall, these results provide accurate information on the distribution of PASs in sport fish from inland lakes and several bird species in New York State.

Key words: PFOS, fish, birds, New York
