TP10 Acclimation / Adaptation of Animals to Metals: Resistance, Tolerance, and Cost (HAR-1117-854692) AFLP analysis of Hyalella azteca collected from metals contaminated sediments. Bollinger, C1, Harper-Arabie, R1, 1 Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA, 98225 ABSTRACT- Hyalella azteca populations were collected from mining impacted streams near Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The collection locations were chosen to best represent a contaminantion gradient. This was confirmed with chemical analysis of sediment and water samples, collected concurrently. Amplified Fragmented Length Polymorphism (AFLP) analyses of the populations were conducted to assess if genetic diversity and structure was related to the level of metal contamination from each collection site. The results are being used to provide a better understanding of the molecular level effects of contaminant exposure and the potential for subsequent population level effects. Key words: Hyalella azteca, AFLP, genetic, metals |
