(237) Is Scrobicularia plana a useful biomonitor of contamination and pollution sediment by heavy metals in the Guadalquivir estuary ?

ABSTRACT- Molluscs are widely used as biomonitoring organisms.Scrobicularia plana is a widely distributed bivalve mollusc being very common in the estuaries of the Atlantic and Mediterranean. It is a deposit feeder and has several features which make it interesting as an indicator. This fact has been verified in some estuaries of England where its potential as a indicator of availability of metal has been taken advantage of. Nevertheless, in many cases the relationship between the levels of contamination and their effect (pollution) is not clear because physiological and environmental variations are superimposed. The objective of this work was to link residue analysis in two target organs: gills and digestive gland and the measure of the response of the organism to the heavy metal contamination (metallothionein and enzyme oxidative stress enzymes, SOD, Cat, Se-GPX, GPX) over time.

Key words: clam, metallothionein, oxidative stress, heavy metals
