ABSTRACT- A course in life cycle assessment under the Industrial Ecology Programme at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology started in the autumn 2000. The course aims at giving a general introduction to LCA methodology and different areas of application for LCA. With ISO 14040 as a platform the students are guided trough the four steps of LCA. The course has a strong focus on students involvement with oral presentations of articles and a realistic case project. The education uses elements of Problem Based Learning (PBL). The students themselves are responsible of formulating a goal and scope definition from a rather broad project description. The teaching staff is more regarded as facilitators than teachers in the project work. Most of the data for the project is provided for, as experience from similar courses has shown that students use too much time and effort in data collection. Due to the lack of a proper text book in the field of LCA, the reading material in the course consists of ISO 14040, some material from the "Nordic guidelines in LCA" and a collection of articles from different fields in LCA.
Key words: LCA, Education, PBL
