ABSTRACT- This work belong to the research project named "Heavy metal pollution in Guadalquivir estuary: Aznalcollar mining spill effects in environment and marine species". The purpose of the present study is to investigate the possible histopathological alterations provoked by the sludge poured in marine organisms. In this sense several sampling sites along the Guadalquivir River and different species of fish (Liza ramada) and molluscs (Crassotrea angulata and Scrobicularia plana) and crustaceans (Uca tangeri) were established. The samples were taken every 3 months, fixed in formaldehyde 10 % in phosphate buffer, carried to the laboratory and processed for histological purposes. Histopathological disorders in target organs like gills: epithelial desquamations with edema formation between others were detected. Could exist a possible correlation between histopathological alterations found and the possible concentrations of contaminants measured in organic tissues.
