(M/MC265) Application of Tools for Environmental Analysis and Management for the Design and re-design of Processes.

Herrera, Israel1, Schuhmacher, Marta1, Castells, Francesc1, Felix, Laura1, 1

ABSTRACT- Normally decisions within design and re-design of processes are based only on technical and economic aspects. Attentions to environmental impacts from waste emissions have traditionally been paid after the process plant is running. There is a growing tendency to focus on preserving the natural resources and to recover the health of the planet. However, this tendency requests to include environmental issues to the same level as the technical and economic ones, for instance the Design for the Environment (DfE) or the Eco-design. This research work aims to integrate the process design with the tools of life cycle impact assessment. In order to that a methodology that includes these tools in the design and redesign of new and existing processes to involve environmental concern decisions has been developed. The integration between both tools describes the related variables in the processes, such as input and output flow of matter and energy. Furthermore, it defines which general aspect of these tools allows its connection, such as for example the procedures for importing and exporting data and variables. This methodology has been applied in the Municipal Solid Waste Incinerators in Tarragona (Spain). A particular emphasis has been put on heavy metals emissions.
